boomsatsuma Degrees Welcomes Metro Mayor Dan Norris.

West of England Metro Mayor Dan Norris joined our staff and students at boomsatsuma Degrees, Tobacco Factory, to see first-hand how we do things differently.

The West of England Combined Authority (WECA) Metro Mayor is an advocate of the region’s expanding Createch Industries, and was keen to understand how boomsatsuma has become one of the region’s leading educators in these sectors. His passion for effective, inclusive skills training was evident throughout his visit.

Metro Mayor Dan Norris said:

“With Netflix, the BBC, Channel 4 and the expanding Bottle Yard Studios, it is clear the West of England is the place to be for creative people.

"I’m determined that we develop our status as the go-to region and that means ensuring we have a pipeline of talented go-getting youngsters who have had top-notch training and can then benefit from these competitive skilled jobs. boomsatsuma expanding to offer new degree courses is just what we need.

"They are giving young people the skills to be the filmmakers, games designers, actors, web developers, visual effect artists and sports journalists of tomorrow. Crucially they have excellent relations with key local employers to ensure our students are getting exactly the training they need to go straight into the industry and get a great job.”

Executive Dean Dr Susan McMillan and founder Mark Curtis introduced Dan to the heads of courses for Filmmaking, Game Art and, Photography and Acting degrees based at Tobacco Factory. The introduction of two new degrees, accredited by Bath Spa University, augments the courses on offer: BA (Hons) Visual Effects and BSc (Hons) Web Design and Development, expanding the choice of opportunities for people aspiring towards Createch degrees.

The Metro Mayor engaged with the students from each of the courses, learning about their personal journeys.

“It was great to share the story of boomsatsuma with Dan this afternoon and that he heard it first-hand from our students. We were very pleased he picked students from Weston, Bath, Kingswood and London, which highlighted our real focus on training the next generation of talent from the region and beyond. As discussed, we are expanding and aligning our new courses in web design, visual effects, creative tech, games production and sound design with the skills and training strategy for the region.

“We’re looking forward to working more closely with WECA and aligning with the region’s future plans around creative and digital skills training.”
