A new dance course is being launched for aspiring Bristol dancers, rising out from a collaboration between creative education providers boomsatsuma and RISE Youth Dance, the city's leading specialist dance company, Feb 2021.

The Level 3 Extended Diploma in Dance is designed to develop independent, confident, dance artists and prepare them for a career in dance.

Under the experienced guidance of Artistic Director Helen Wilson, of RISE Youth Dance, along with a team of professional dancers and choreographers, the course will develop student’s technical, creative and performance skills. Helen explains:

“The teachers at RISE Youth Dance and boomsatsuma are all professional dancers and that shared ethos along with our aim to develop youth opportunities in Bristol, has allowed us to create a format similar to a dance conservatoire, tailored to 16–18-year-olds, with career progression as a focus.

“Having started RISE Youth Dance with just a few students 13 years ago, we now run six groups and are ready for expansion. We have the artistic direction and boomsatsuma has the expertise in education that will underpin a higher level of dance training in Bristol, which is very exciting.

“I have a simple message: ‘If you want a career in the arts, in dance, you can have one'.

The course has a foundation of Contemporary Dance, whilst including diverse styles such as Street Dance (House and Funk) and World Styles (Carribean Soca and Afrobeats). Ballet is also taught on the course, adding to the wide range of techniques. In addition to these core areas of study, classes and workshops in various other dance styles will be incorporated into the course and lead to live performances. It will be intensive and demanding to reflect the nature of professional dance training, led by a supportive and nurturing team of teachers and dance artists.

The new dance course sits alongside other creative courses at boomsatsuma, including film and photography, which will assist dancers creating portfolios to take on in the career.
